Palm OS Hotsyncing and Active sync for WindowsNot all tips apply to both systems
Watch your times
First thing to check is your time setting on both the device and your computer. Be sure the times are close if not that alone can cause both the hotsync not starting and maybe even duplicating.
Bad cables
Something as simply as your hotsync cable can cause you gray hair, I go thru a cable every 3 or 4 months. They just wear out from being hooked and unhooked.
Proper setting on device
Watch your settings on your device; go to ?Hotsync? on your device. Many times things change for no know reason and this one can cause you hours of aggravation. About the middle of the screen you will see a black diamond with words beside it ?Cradle/Cable? or IR to a ?PC/Handheld?. If your using a cable make sure it?s set right. Above that you will see ?Local? and ?Modem?, most times it should be on local.
Proper settings on Computer
Make sure your hotsync manager is turned on, sometimes the settings you did in the beginning have switched back to being off. You should see the blue and red circle on your task bar.
Where?s my contacts and calendar?
Many times during set up of a new program we just keep clicking on ?Next?, well if you did that you just zoomed past where the software asks Outlook or Palm. Look at both programs to see if your information is maybe there.
Soft reset
All else fails try a soft reset, pull the battery. Just like your computer every once in awhile you need to do a Ctrl, alt and delete well the Treo needs the same thing. This shuts down and half open programs and fixes a ton of things that could be going on.
Check your connectors
Lint, dirt or grease from your fingers can keep your device from talking to your computer. Clean the cable on both ends and the bottom of your device. Canned air and maybe a little alcohol can help with the connection.
Check your ports
Sometimes the ports of your computer can be malfunctioning or talking to another program. Folks email me asking why all of a sudden they can?t hotsync and I ask if they have loaded camera software, many say yes. There?s the problem the camera software will claim a port causing that port to not work.
Check for alarms
If you have any alarms set or pending for the time frame you attempt to hotsync it can shut down the ability to communicate. This would most apply if you have not turned off and alarm and hit the snooze button.
Go to Palm?s website
If all the above fails go to Palm?s website www.Palm.com click on Support and look for the Knowledge Library. Chose your device and click on synchronization and start with the first choice that says start here.
